Monthly Favorites: MAY!

Hello there lovelies! This is my first monthly favorite post and I am so excited to show you what I have been loving. I have several different categories of things. Please excuse the crappy photography until I get my dream camera (hopefully within the next month).

So let's do this!
First off is the makeup product that has been my best friend this month, particularly because I have been wearing warmer colors which in turn has caused me to wear this quite often. It is a Mac Frost lipstick called Meltdown. It goes on very pigmented (orangey) and it shines and shimmers, bringing out my auburn hair and brown eyes. I think this is a great summer lip color and I can't wait to pair it with summer looks.

Now, I have mentioned the Tresemmé Tres Two Spray in my Alphabet tag as being one of my two favorite hairsprays. I just thought it deserves to be mentioned a second time because it is very special to me as I use it almost everyday. I absolutely adore the smell and it holds really well.

My other hair product favorite this month is the Garnier Fructis Color Shield Color Sealer Lightweight Leave-In for Color Treated Hair. Whoa, that is a mouthful. Anyway, since I have dyed my hair many a time, I feel it is necessary to keep my hair extra healthy. I use the Garnier Fructis shampoo and conditioner that correspond with this leave-in and I find it makes my hair shine and feel healthy. I just pour a bit from the bottle onto my hand and then finger through my hair, making sure to distribute it thoroughly and evenly.

My next favorite is a limited edition shower gel by LUSH called Snow Fairy. Normally I am not crazy about the flavor of bubble gum, but the smell of it is heavenly! Not only is the packaging adorable, but they also personalize the bottle by putting a little sticker on it telling you what employee of LUSH made your specific product. Also, check out the "How to Use" in the photo below - so cute!

 Now is Good

Now, to be blunt... this movie is extremely sad. I have a very strong love-hate relationship with sad movies, particularly because I will openly weep during and after one even in public. However, this movie is so moving and beautiful. Jeremy Irvine and Dakota Fanning took my breath away. I felt as I was watching the movie that I was experiencing everything with the characters - anger, relief, surprise, hopelessness, happiness. I became so enveloped. So please see this if you haven't already!

This is my favorite comedy of the month! This movie, which I would classify as a sort of a female version of The Hangover, has an amazing cast, with actors such as Kirsten Dunst, Rebel Wilson, Isla Fischer (one of my favorite actresses), Lizzy Caplan (Janis Ian from Mean Girls), Adam Scott, and James Marsden. It is quite inappropriate for anyone under 17 (it is indeed rated R); however, it is clever, quotable, and had me constantly laughing out loud.

Perfume by Patrick Suskind

As a part of my honors course this past semester, we were required to read this as our last assignment in early May. The vivid imagery created by Suskind's eloquent and descriptive words was captivating. The story itself was downright disturbing. I do not want to give away too much but the main character, who has an extraordinary and almost superhuman gift of discerning scents, kills young girls to capture their smell. The ending was a shock and left me with mixed emotions. It is not a light or easy read but definitely worthwhile!

My favorite food this month has got to be strawberriesFor breakfast (when I am not having a Luna Bar), I like to cut up three or four strawberries and add that to Greek yogurt and granola. It is very yummy and makes me feel healthy for the start of my day.

My favorite drink this month has been ice cold water with a slices of lemon & lime.

It's so refreshing and cleanses my system throughout the day! I refill my Mason jar with water (still keeping the same slices all day) probably five times per day.

So that concludes my list of May favorites! I realize that I have not been talking much about fashion on my blog but I assure you, I have many plans for when I can actually take decent photos.
I hope you enjoyed this post and leave a comment below if you'd like!

Choosing to be Happy

"Smile every chance you get. Not because life has been easy, perfect, or exactly as you had anticipated, but because you choose to be happy and grateful for all the good things you do have and all the problems you know you don't have".

You must live. Live every moment to its fullest. Live every new experience with the greatest enthusiasm. Live knowing that the connections you make with people are worth developing and that sharing life with others is what makes living so beautiful. Live every bite, live every text, live every class you attend, live every embrace, live every sob at the end of a movie. Just live and do it all while choosing to be happy.

But, choosing to be happy is not always easy, especially when you feel life keeps pushing you down. I have realized through years of both sad and happy times that there is not enough time in this world to be wasting it drowned in negativity. I realized not very long ago that I needed to stop living my life away worrying and pouting and grieving and complaining and feeling depressed. The people around me, particularly my family, did not want to be around me. I would come home from school and rehearsals exhausted, crabby, and pessimistic. Everyday I was choosing to look at all the negatives and I would complain and complain and complain. I would get angry at the drop of a hat and sad at the tiniest comment. Instead of waking up in the morning telling myself, "Today is a going to be a good day", I would wake up dreading what was ahead of me. This outlook on life got me nowhere. I was miserable.

Now grant it, this outlook did not stem from nothing. Lots of things were happening in my life that caused my spiral downward. After having a great freshman year, I went into my sophomore year enthusiastic and happy.

However, that enthusiasm and happiness soon turned bitter that October of 2010.

I experienced one of the most traumatic events of my life - the death of a boy named Dan. Now, the story is very long so I may tell it in detail in another post at a different time, but basically he was killed the day of homecoming in an ATV accident. I was supposed to be his date but I could not go because I had a feis (an Irish dance competition). So instead, one of my closest friend's went with him. The morning he died, I won my competition and I only needed one more win to move up to the highest level of Irish dance - Open Championships. It was one of the best days of my life until we found out that night that there was an accident before homecoming. When we discovered it was Dan, I immediately thought my friend was in the accident as well. She was and still is today one of my best and most dear friends. When we were told the details and how it was before she had arrived at the house for pictures, my heart immediately turned from worry about her to despair for Dan. The ATV had hit a tree and Dan was driving. He was killed. I cannot convey through words how I felt. I have tried before and nothing seems to suffice. All I can say is that I remember not being able to control myself - I was weeping and shaking and my heart was pounding and all I could think was how unfair the whole situation was.
That was the worst day of my life. His funeral comes a close second.

After his death, I went into a state of grieving. This state would not cease for two years. Death and heartache kept surrounding me.

Soon after, one of my most beloved teachers (my grade school librarian, family friend, and mother figure) died of bone cancer. She had struggle with cancer for years. I hate cancer.

After that, two different friend's of mine and my older brother dads died unexpectedly.

My grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer. She received a lumpectomy but never fully recovered. Several months later, she passed away.

Then a friend of my older brother killed himself. My older brother was a senior in high school and the captain of the crew team. Both Dan and the boy who killed himself, Joe, were on the team with my brother.

Another grade school teacher was diagnosed and died 3 months later of lung cancer - she had never smoked a day in her life.

The brother of my cousin's nanny was killed in a car accident that severed his body in half. And another high school boy that some of my friends were close with fell asleep at the wheel, crashed, and died.

I began dating my first boyfriend. He was a senior at the all boy's school while I was a sophomore at the all girls school. I felt so lucky and he was so cute and kind. I introduced him to a bunch of my friends at a football game after I had been dating him for about two weeks. He particularly hit it off with one of them. They laughed the whole night and I was so happy because my friends liked him and they were all getting along. However, as the weeks that turned into months went by, the two of them became oddly close. People started to talk. Eventually, after hearing story and story about how they were talking every day until the wee hours of the night and going to parties to meet up knowing I wouldn't be there, I asked my boyfriend what was going on. I was so afraid to because I did not want him to think I didn't want him to be friends with other girls or I was being paranoid. He ardently assured me they were just friends. I asked her and she denied all the rumors. This continued until I finally could not take it. It was clear something was happening and I felt like it was unfair to us both to stay in the relationship. I broke up with him and the next day they became official.

There are quite a lot more things that contributed to my sadness but I think you get the idea. It was hard to find happiness when I seemed surrounded by pain.

It wasn't until I went on a retreat at the end of my junior year when I decided I needed to have an attitude adjustment. Now that sounds quite childish, like a naughty three year old sassing back to her mother, but it was real. I needed to focus on how wonderful my life truly was. I spent a lot of time in self-reflection where I thought about the way I was living. I suppose I had what some would call an "epiphany". This epiphany told me that I didn't have to be who I had become. I was the one in control of my life and if I did not like who I was, then I alone had the capacity to change. The events that led up the that moment had only made me a stronger human being. I could choose the way I would feel and the way I would react.
I could choose my own happiness

And thus began my journey towards being happy. And for the past two years, I have never been happier.

I feel extremely blessed every day. Of course I have off days LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, but I now know that I can wake up in the morning and know that it is a fresh, brand new day that I can mold into whatever I want to mold it in to.

Even though it is not always easy, choosing to be happy will make your life so much better. It will bring you opportunities, experiences, adventures, relations, and feelings you never thought possible. Your own happiness is worth fighting for and at the end of the day, you are the only one who has control over you.

Something that always helps me when I feel my world is too much to handle is to remember that I am never alone. Even in my darkest hours I know that there are people out there who know what I am going through and there are also people out there who love me so much. I want to leave you with a few thoughts that I think help me stay positive and optimistic.

Know that you are never alone.
Know that you are so loved.
Know that life is what you make it.
Know that life has its ups and downs.
Know that things will get better.
Know that you have the capacity to change.
Know that you deserve the world.
And with knowing this,  know that you can choose to be happy!

Song of the Week No.1

Hello there!
So I thought I would start doing a weekly song to highlight. They most likely will not be new songs, but rather something I just so happened to listen to a lot in the last seven days. This post will be done every Monday as I look back on the past week.
So to kick start this weekly post, I would like to name "Midnight City" by M83 my song of the week!
Check it out and let me know in the comments what you think. The video is also very interesting.
Have a beautiful Memorial Day lovelies!

Hello there! So after seeing many YouTubers do this tag, I decided I would do it too! This video is meant to be a bit silly, while also giving you a visual to the things I found about my bedroom at home. Now, quite a bit of my things are currently in a storage unit near my college collecting dust until I return to school in late August, so I may end up doing another one of these tags for my dorm room.
Also, I plan on doing a room tour for my dorm as soon as I get back.
Below is a list of all the items I mention (some come with an explanation). Also, there are links to the places I purchased some of these things so check that out if you are interested in owning them too. Also, forgive the poor quality - I am currently saving up for a nice camera and light so that I can continue to film blog posts.
I hope you enjoy!

The 30 Day Snap

Hello there! My goodness I cannot believe May is almost over.

As June creeps into view, I have decided to join many other bloggers in doing The 30 Day Snap Challenge. The inspiration for this idea has come from the lovely Louise from Sprinkle of Glitter. I absolutely love Louise and think this is such a great idea for the summer. Essentially, I will be documenting the whole month of June with a picture a day which I will post here on my blog. Now, being that I already snap photos quite frequently, I think this challenge will be a fun and easy commitment.

Also, I think this is especially great for college students who are currently missing their friends from school as they spend their summers back home - this assumption is coming from personal experience :( I miss all my lovelies! It will be great for when you reunite to show your friends what was happening on the daily during your summer. So because of this, I wish to tag my beautiful friend Maddie to do this challenge along with me on her blog Ring-A-Round A Rosey

If you are feeling inspired by this idea and wish to partake, I encourage you to visit Louise's blog for a full explanation. Wish me luck and if you are doing it as well, send me links to your pages so I can see what you are up to!

May Music

Even though May is only half way over, I can definitely tell that these three songs by some new artists in my life are my favorites of the month.

The first is James Hersey's "So Close to Me". I first heard it when watching one of my favorite YouTuber/Blogger's - Rhiannon Ashlee from FashionRocksMySocks in this video.
I immediately loved the upbeat vibe and it never fails to bring a smile to my face :)

The next song is Bastille's "Pompeii".
I. AM. OBSESSED. The band Bastille is just down right kick ass.
I listen to this song a bit too much. I also like the music video. It shows the lead singer, Dan Smith, trying to get away from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii. The ash from the volcano turns everyone's eyes black and at the end of the video, he cannot escape and his eyes turn as well. I also recommend "Poet" and "You Make Me Feel".

My third favorite right now is "Oceans" by a band called Coasts. Though they are not well known and do not have many songs released, I think this song is going to be my summer jam :) I can see myself driving with the windows down belting the words as it blasts from the speakers. It is so damn catchy - also it has stark drums infused with light synths that are uplifting and just make you feel good.

So check these out on Spotify, iTunes, Pandora, Youtube, or whatever media you use to listen to your music. Obviously I realize that not everyone will have the same taste as I but I hope you enjoy!

May and April Instagrams!

So for the past two months my campus has been absolutely beautiful and the warm weather has inspired some happy and sunny days outside with my friends! The yummy cupcakes and the Passion Fruit Tea from Starbucks were just two of the many things I ate outside while appreciating the sun :)

Those blue flats were from a thrift shop in Boston. They caught my eye and I crossed my fingers hoping they would fit - they fit me perfectly!! They have definitely turned into my new favorite pair of flats and I am sure I will get a lot of wear out of them in the summer.

Now last weekend I went to see Macbeth on Broadway and it was breathtaking! I had an amazing day in NYC with my future roomie Michelle and two other friends who we met up with for dinner and then the show. The day started off with us waking up quite early to stand in line at the box office until it opened at 10 am. We were third in line and ended up getting tickets. After securing the reservations, we popped into MAC, where I got a new lipstick <Frost Meltdown> and a new eyeshadow <Brown Down Veluxe> and Forever 21, where Michelle got an adorable tote bag for traveling. We headed down to Chinatown for lunch at Joe's Shanghai and then shopped around Soho for a few hours. We went into Sabon where we had a hand exfoliating treatment and I bought my mum a gift set for Mother's Day that I think she will really like :) We finally met up with our two friends at Epistrophy ( in Soho and I had a scrumptious croissant with salmon, brie, and arugula. It was SO GOOD. After supper, we walked to The Little Cupcake Bakeshop in Nolita and I got a Vanilla Cupcake with Cream Cheese Frosting. We walked a bit a ways to eat our cupcakes at a fountain in a garden - I forget the name :( We then hopped back on the subway to head back up to Times Square to the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. We made it to the show about 20 minutes early and may or may not have moved to empty seats that were a better view right as the lights were going down... hehe :)

The show was spectacular. Alan Cumming is insanely talented and his performance blew me away. Now, I adore live theatre and have seen a great deal of it for someone my age (p.s. I am a theatre major and I am 19), but this was the first theatrical performance to have such a strong effect on me. I physically could not speak words for about thirty minutes after the show ended. I was bawling my eyes out and refused to look anyone in the eyes. It was shocking and heartbreaking. I will never forget my experience and hope that I can continue to have that strong of emotional reactions to theater in the future - and hopefully I can produce that affect on people in my own performances as well.

So anyway, I hope you've enjoyed this little explanation of those four Instagram pictures! I got a bit carried away - which I tend to do quite a lot...
